The term Tres Sangres comes from the Spanish and means something like “three-blooded”. After all, this breed owes its name to the crossbreeding of three different horse breeds: the Pura Raza Española, the English thoroughbred and the Arabian horse. The horse with the three noble bloodlines has its origin in the south of Spain, where it is still bred today.

The origin of the Tres Sangres
At the beginning of the 20th century the Pura Raza Española was crossed with the English thoroughbred in order to obtain even faster and therefore more suitable horses for cattle herding: the so-called vaquero horses. However, it was soon discovered that these bred offspring were too nervous – and therefore unsuitable for working with cattle. The cross-breeding of the Arabian finally resulted in not only a fast but also a gentle and balanced horse.
The versatile Spaniard
To this day, Tres Sangres represents the best characteristics of its three original breeds: The horses have the rideability of the Pura Raza Españolas, the speed and power of the high-legged English thoroughbred and the gentle and spirited nature of the Arabian. This makes the so-called “Three-Blood” very versatile and makes him an ideal horse for leisure, dressage and show jumping. Tres Sangres also enjoys great popularity in eventing. Their various positive characteristics do not only make them a noble and harmonious sport horse, they are also used for the traditional Spanish riding style of the Doma Vaquera.
Breeding in the present time
Nowadays there are various breeding methods of this versatile horse breed. Very popular is for example the mating of the best offspring of Tres Sangres among each other. But also the crossing of the Anglo-Arabian with the PRE has proven to be excellent, because through them the typical characteristics and features of the three different bloodlines are passed on.
