Sebastián Fernández – Master of spanish riding

The riding style of the shepherds

The Spanish team of Sebastián Fernández shows the traditional way of riding cattle herdsmen – Doma Vaquera. With a wooden pole about three meters long, the so-called “Garrocha”, the talented riders turn and tackle obstacles or their own axis with great skill at a high speed! Shepherds used to haul their herds together on horseback and catch runaway animals – the “Garrocha” has always been an important tool for this purpose. With an incredible vivacity and fiery temperament, the Spanish team makes the hearts of the audience beat faster and proves that the Doma Vaquera is one of the most beautiful riding styles in southern Europe.

A talented family

Sebastián’s son, Sebita, has been an integral part of the team for several years now. If the two present the impressive riding style, it is immediately clear from whom the young rider from Andalusia has inherited his talent. Sebastián’s wife, Mercedes, impressively demonstrates her skills in the shows as well: with sheer elegance, she presents dressage lessons such as piaffe or passage. Riding in the women’s saddle has also staged her in a unique way on the show.

Sebastián Fernández at CAVALLUNA

At CAVALLUNA, the team captivates with its demanding riding lessons: a constant change between high assembly and enormous speed calls for the highest concentration of horse and rider. In “Legend of the desert” (Legende der Wüste), the team shows, among other traversals, pirouettes and flying gallops change and proves how well their horses are trained! The Pura Raza Española, P.R.E.s for short, is particularly suitable for this traditional riding style. Her psychic strength and her compact, muscular physique make her perfect partners for the Doma Vaquera.

Since the riders always have to hold the “Garrocha”, their reins are only in one hand. That’s why they have to master fine aids – but that’s no problem for the team of Sebastián Fernández!
