Did you know? These popular warm-blooded horses do not only work well with people but also with other horses. The gentle horses from the Netherlands are very calm by nature, which is why they don’t have any problems in larger, mixed groups of horses.
The KWPN (Koninklijk Warmbloed Paard Nederland) is a warm-blooded horse from the Netherlands. It is among the youngest horse breeds in the world. KWPN breeding started by crossbreeding the Dutch Groningen and Gelderland horses in the mid-20th century. By additional crossbreeding with thoroughbred horses, these beautiful and athletic horses with a particular talent for different riding disciplines were created. In particular when it comes to jumping and dressage, the warm-blooded horses from the Netherlands are high achievers. The black stallion “Totilas” is the KWPN superstar. In professional riding, he is considered to be one of the best dressage horses in the world. His successes are sure to have had an impact on the horse breed’s increasing popularity. Today, there are three different styles of KWPN breeding that are suited for different disciplines.
KWPN horses look like classical warm-blooded horses. They have a rectangular body, an elegant head and a strong neck. Their body can be sturdier or more delicate, depending on whether an animal descends from a Groninger or a Gelderland horse. Many KWPN horses appear similar to thoroughbreds, which is also reflected in their gaits. Their movements are smooth and expansive, making them appear very elegant and exquisite.
The Dutch horses distinguish themselves by their expressive appearance as well as their lively character and the fact that they are extremely motivated: They are fearless, eager to learn and very resilient. Combined with their uncomplicated temperament, they are the perfect sport horses. KWPN horses enjoy training and have a gentle and friendly spirit that makes them reliable partners and popular recreational horses. In addition, they are relatively easy to ride, which also makes them suitable for untrained riders. The warm-blooded horses from the Netherlands are real allrounders, which is why they are becoming more and more common, especially in Europe and the USA.
